A VISIT TO SIVASAGAR
Last year during our
school winter vacation we(our family) went to sivasagar to see the historical
monuments. At 4 in the morning we all reach to bus stoppage to go towards
guwahati .After reaching guwahati we have forward towards Sivasagar. Almost in
the evening we reached our destination, means sivasagar. During our trip to sivasagar
we have seen too many tea garden on the way. Some lady workers were working there.
Sibsagar is a town in Upper Assam, about 360
kilometres north east of Guwahati.
It is the district headquarters of the Sivasagar district. It is well known for
its Ahom palaces and monuments. Sivasagar is now also an important centre for the tea and oil
industries. we have seen too many historical monuments as well as destructions
in our visit like sivadol, Rang Ghar, Kareng Ghar, Maidams in charaideo and
many more.
Sivadol is a
group of structures comprising three Hindu temples of Sivadol, Visnudol
and Devidol, other shrines, and a museum. These are located on the banks of the
Sivasagar tank, in the heart of Sivasagar, in Assam. The tank was
constructed between 1731 and 1738.The height of the Sivadol is 104 feet.
Rang ghar-
The Rang Ghar is two-storied building which once served as the royal
sports-pavilion where Ahom kings and nobles were spectators at games
like buffalo fights and other sports at Rupahi Pathar, particularly during the Rongali
Bihu festival in the Ahom capital of Rangpur. It is 3 km
away from the center of the Sivasagar Town. Situated by the side of
the Assam Trunk Road, it lies to the northeast of the Rangpur Palace, a seven storied
royal complex.
Kareng
ghar- karng
ghar is also known as The Gorgaon Palace, is located
in Gorgaon, 15 kilometres from Sivasagar,Of
all Ahom ruins, the Kareng Ghar is one of the grandest examples of Ahom
architecture. The palace structures were made of wood and stones. In
1747 Pramatta Singha, constructed
the brick wall of about 5 kilometres in
length surrounding the Gargaon Palace and the masonry gate leading to it.
After the destruction of the old palace it was rebuilt around 1752 by Rajeswar Singha.Rangpur was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom and served as its military-station.

Maidams are tumuli of the royalty
and aristocracy of the medieval Ahom Kingdom (1228-1826)
in Assam. The royal maidams are found exclusively at Charaideo, near
Sibasagar; whereas other maidams are found scattered in the region
between Jorhat and Dibrugarh towns. Structurally, a maidam
consists of vaults with one or more chambers. The vaults have a domical superstructure
that are covered by ahemispherical earthen mound that rises high above the
ground with an open pavilion at the peak called chow chali.
The Ahom community in Assam consider the excavation as
an affront to their tradition, because the maidams are associated with the Ahom
ancestor worship and the festival of Me-Dam-Me-Ph.
Really it was an amazing trip for all of us. We seen a
lot valuables there, also learned a lot of the Ahom dynasty and the historical place Sibasagar. We spent three days there. We enjoyed a lot.
